Early Childhood Special Education
Early Childhood Special Education (Ages 3–5)
Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) provides free support and services for children ages 3 to 5 with developmental delays or disabilities. Services may include specialized instruction, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and family support. ECSE helps children build skills and prepare for success in school while learning alongside peers whenever possible.

Preschool Overview
Preschool special education services support young children with developmental delays or disabilities. Services may be provided in inclusive preschool settings or specialized programs based on student needs.
Referral Process
Parents, guardians, and community providers may refer a child for a preschool evaluation by contacting the Special Education Department or the child’s assigned school.
Transition from Early Intervention
We work closely with Early Intervention providers to support a smooth transition into preschool services for children turning three.
Transition Planning (Ages 14–22)
Transition Overview
Transition planning helps students prepare for life after high school. Beginning at age 14, the IEP Team works with students and families to plan for the future based on the student’s strengths, interests, preferences, and goals.
College and Career Planning
In alignment with Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) guidance and the new IEP format, transition planning includes age-appropriate college and career exploration to support informed decision-making and goal-setting.
Postsecondary Planning
Transition planning may include preparation for:
- Postsecondary education
- Vocational training or career pathways
- Competitive, integrated employment
- Independent living and community participation
Students are encouraged to actively participate in their IEP meetings and take an active role in planning for their future, with support from families and school staff.
