Farm to School
The Vision
New Bedford Public Schools' Food & Nutrition Services is committed to connecting students with fresh, locally grown foods while promoting nutrition education and agricultural awareness. Through Farm to School initiatives, the district incorporates Massachusetts-grown products into school meals, giving students opportunities to enjoy fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms.
Programs such as Harvest of the Month introduce students to new fruits and vegetables through menu features, taste tests, and educational activities. By linking cafeteria experiences with classroom learning and school garden opportunities, Farm to School helps students develop a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and the importance of healthy eating. These efforts strengthen connections between schools, local farmers, and the community while supporting student wellness and lifelong healthy habits.

UMass Extension Nutrition Education Program
New Bedford Public Schools partners with the UMass Extension Nutrition Education Program to provide students with engaging nutrition education that promotes healthy eating habits, physical activity, and overall wellness. These programs reach students both during and after school and often extend learning opportunities to parents, caregivers, and families.
Through a series of interactive lessons based on the USDA-approved Show Me Nutrition curriculum, students learn about MyPlate, the benefits of different food groups, the importance of regular physical activity, and food safety practices. To reinforce classroom learning, the Food & Nutrition Services Department collaborates with UMass Extension to offer taste tests featuring fresh fruits and vegetables, giving students the opportunity to explore new foods and make healthy connections between nutrition education and everyday choices.
