After School Supper Program

The Importance of the CACFP

Research shows that hunger negatively impacts children's ability to focus, academic performance, attendance, behavior, and overall well-being. While many children receive free or reduced-price meals during the school day, food insecurity often continues after school hours, on weekends, and during school breaks.

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federally funded, state-administered program designed to combat child hunger and improve nutrition. Through its At-Risk Afterschool Meals component, eligible organizations can receive reimbursement for nutritious snacks and suppers served to youth ages 18 and under during afterschool programs, weekends, school closures, and school-year breaks. By supporting access to healthy meals in safe and enriching environments, CACFP helps children stay focused, engaged, and healthy while strengthening afterschool programming and supporting working families.
