Check here often for new opportunities! This list is organized by due date and includes any scholarship opportunities that are shared with New Bedford High School staff. This list is not exhaustive, and seniors are encouraged to do their own research for available scholarships. Students who need help searching for scholarships are encouraged to see their school counselor. Additionally, at the end of this list you will find links to Scholarship Guidance Newsletters. 
All members of the NBHS Class of 2023 who are continuing their education after graduation are encouraged to complete the New Bedford High School Scholarship Application, one application that is used for multiple awards. In order to be considered for these awards, applications must be submitted by April 14, 2023.

February Deadlines

Henry David Thoreau Scholarship: Candidates for this scholarship must be Massachusetts residents and be a senior graduating from a Massachusetts high school. Students with strong academic qualifications and a commitment to the environmental field may apply for an undergraduate scholarship totaling up to $26,000 to the student’s accredited institution of choice. Visit to apply by February 1, 2023.

Massachusetts Daughters of the American Revolution, Inc.: Candidates for this scholarship must be a resident of Massachusetts and have a weighted GPA of at least 3.0 and plan to attend an accredited institution of higher learning. Elks National Foundation Scholarship: Legacy Foundation Scholarships are available for any child or grandchild of a living Elk who joined the order before April 1, 2020. Apply online at by February 1, 2023.

McDonald's HACER National Scholarship: McDonald’s is awarding up to 30 McDonald’s HACER National Scholarships, ranging from $5,000 to $100,000 to help students of Hispanic/Latino heritage continue their educational growth. Applications will be reviewed by an independent selection committee that will take many things into consideration including academic performance, community involvement, personal statements, and financial need. Massachusetts Tree Wardens & Foresters Association: Scholarships range from $500 to $1,500 per student. An applicant must be planning to enroll in an accredited college or university in Massachusetts majoring in arboriculture, community forest management, urban forest management or a related field. Venus Morris Griffin Scholarship Fund: Venus Morris Griffin established a scholarship fund to help children much like her own. A $10,000 annual scholarship fund was created to help deserving high school students with an incarcerated parent to ensure that nothing stops them from reaching their full potential. Applicants must be a high school senior in the United States and must have a biological parent that is currently incarcerated. Students that are adopted and in foster care that meet all terms and conditions are encouraged to apply. Application and more information is available at Applications close on February 15, 2023
Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship: Sloane Stephens has always been committed to giving back and supporting her community. As she competes at the highest levels of her sport, winning the US Open in 2017 and rising to become the #3 ranked player in the world, she also dedicates her time to charitable efforts with the Sloane Stephens Foundation. She founded the nonprofit in 2013 at the age of 20 to provide more opportunities to underserved children through education and sports.All high school seniors and current undergraduate students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible to apply. Military Benefit Association Scholarshp: The Military Benefit Association has established a scholarship program to assist members' dependent children and spouses, along with National Guardsmen, Reservists and Veterans who are members and who plan to continue education in college or vocational school programs. Scholarships are offered each year for full-time study at any accredited institution of the student's choice. This year, MBA will award eighteen $2,000 college scholarships for the Academic Year 2023. Eligible applicants include high school seniors who are enrolling full-time as an undergraduate student at an accredited two or four year college, university or vocational-technical school in the Fall of 2023, have a 2.5 grade point average, and are the unmarried, dependent child under age 26 of an MBA member. Columbus Citizens Foundation: To be eligible, applicants must be of Italian descent (at least 25%) and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. Click here for more information and QR code to apply. Multiple awards are available, up to $6,250. Deadline is February 20, 2023. 
P.L.A.Y. (Pet Lifestyle And You) Scholars Helping Collars: Students from across the U.S. are invited to apply for P.L.A.Y.’s annual Scholars Helping Collars Scholarship. This $1,500 scholarship rewards one student who can tell the best story, describing the impact he or she made in the life of a rescue animal or animal welfare cause in general. Merrimack Valley & Bridgewater Credit Unions Scholarship Program: Graduating seniors in the Merrimack Valley and South Shore regions are eligible and do not need membership with the credit unions to apply. Applicants must electronically submit a copy of their transcript, one letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, coach, etc., and complete the essay with no more than 500 words. Follow link for application and essay prompt. Multiple awards are available: Lisa Lewis Goodman Community Spirit Award ($2,500) & fourteen $1,000 awards. Deadline is February 28th, 2023.

Fred M. Young Sr./SAE Engineering Scholarship: Incoming college freshmen with a minimum GPA of 3.75, unweighted, who intend to pursue an engineering/related science degree through an ABET accredited program with an interest in automotive/ground/air engineering, should consider this $1000 scholarship from the Young Radiator Company in memory of its founder. The Coast Guard Exchange Scholarship Program: This program was established to provide additional financial resources to dependent children of Coast Guard personnel embarking on undergraduate college/university studies. Annually a $2,000 scholarship is awarded to the outstanding applicants on a one-time basis. For details, visit The deadline to apply is February 28, 2023.
Information Security Undergraduate Scholarship: Up to 20 scholarships ranging from $1000-$5000 will be awarded to students pursuing or planning to pursue a degree with a focus on cybersecurity, information assurance, or similar field in the fall of 2023. Donald and Barbara Mozley Scholarship: This award provides support for students pursuing an engineering degree at an ABET-accredited college or university. Applicants should be active in a STEM activity in or out of school, or a STEM mentor/volunteer. Multiple awards of $5000 each year will be awarded. Tau Beta Pi Engineering Scholarship: Tau Beta Pi Association, the engineering honor society, is the world's largest engineering society. The purpose of the Tau Beta Pi is to recognize engineering students of superior scholarship and exemplary character and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges. Headquartered in Knoxville, TN, the Association's largest national philanthropy is its fellowship program, which has provided $7,809,000 in advanced-study grants to 1,706 students, and the scholarship program that has provided $6,557,000 in awards to 3,369 engineering seniors. Applicants must be US residents with a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.75, planning to pursue an engineering or related science degree through an ABET accredited program. SouthCoast Community Foundation Scholarships: The SouthCoast Community Foundation offers a variety of scholarship awards to students throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. Applications close March 1, 2023. For more information and the online scholarship portal, visit
ACS Scholars Program: ACS awards renewable scholarships to undergraduate students from historically underrepresented groups in the chemical sciences, majoring in chemistry-related disciplines, and intending to pursue chemistry-related careers. Selected recipients are awarded up to $5,000* per academic year. To date, over 3,500 students have received funding from the ACS Scholars Program. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent US residents of African descent or Black, Hispanic or Latina/Latino/Latinx, or Indigenous. Rockland Trust Scholarship:
(13) $3,000 renewable scholarships for students entering college for the first time and have a 2.5 minimum GPA. Visit to apply by March 6, 2023.
Mark Bavis Leadership Foundation Scholarship: This foundation was created to help deserving young men and women excel in their quest to improve themselves, their school or their community, and is available to any high school student in Massachusetts. It is awarded on the basis of need. The Foundation will give more serious consideration to those students who have made efforts to make a difference in their communities and/or have shown leadership qualities within their school or community. Blacks at Microsoft Scholarship: BAM is dedicated to supporting the continued growth and development of black employees and encouraging students to pursue a career in technology. The BAM Scholarship was created to enable Black and African American students to attend college and pursue a career in technology.  The goal is to empower future generations to do and be more. Applicants must be a US-based high school senior of African descent (for example, African American, African, Ethiopian, etc.), planning to attend a four-year college or university in the US in the fall immediately following your high school graduation, pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, computer information systems, or select business programs (such as finance, business administration, or marketing), with financial need. More information and the application is available at Fifty scholarships will be awarded, five $20,000 scholarships awarded over four years, and forty-five one time $2500 awards. Applications are due by March 15, 2023.

Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship: This scholarship will be awarded to a student who is fighting through their own loss of a close family member, legal guardian or loved one, and is in need of financial support for their education as they move forward. Applicants will be expected to submit an essay responding to the following: How has the loss of a close family member or loved one caused you to focus on what matters most in your life and what you want to “fight” to achieve? One scholarship of $10,200 will be awarded. Deadline to apply is March 17, 2023.
Rebekah Assembly of Massachusetts: $1,000 scholarship for qualified seniors who plan to further their education by attending two or four year college programs. Follow this link for the application. Submissions due by March 31, 2023.

April Deadlines

Club Madeirense S. S. Sacramento-Feast of The Blessed Sacrament Scholarship: Each year, the Club Madeirense S. S. Sacramento Charitable Foundation, Inc. presents up to thirty $1000 scholarship awards to graduating high school students. Scholarships are available to graduating seniors seeking an undergraduate or associate degree from an accredited college or university or seeking a certificate of completion from an accredited trade school. Awards are available in three categories: Open Category: Available to all candidates; Portuguese Category: Available to Portuguese descendant candidates; Madeiran Heritage Category: Available to Madeiran descendant candidates. Make sure that the application is completed and attach the required documents. Applications must be mailed to the address listed on the application and received by the deadline of April 1. Prince Henry Society New Bedford Chapter Scholarship: To be eligible, applicants must be graduating seniors with some Portuguese descent seeking an undergraduate or associate degree from an accredited college/university. Applicants must electronically submit a copy of their transcript, at least one letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, coach, etc., and a copy of your college acceptance letter. Several awards offered have specific criteria that applicants must meet in order to qualify:

1. A parishioner in good standing of the Immaculate Conception Church.

2. A student from NBHS pursuing a law degree. Preference given to Boston University


3. Three scholarships are reserved for students pursuing a career in medicine.

4. A student, athlete, preference given to a NBHS soccer player.

5. A female student pursuing a career in education.

6. A student who attended the “Carlos Pacheco Elementary School” in New Bedford.

7. A student enrolled in a pre-dental program.

Orchard Scholarship for Women of Color in STEM: Orchard will award three scholarships of $500, $100, and $2500 to a female high school senior of color interested in pursuing a STEM degree in college, or a female undergraduate college sophomore or junior of color currently pursuing a STEM degree. High School senior applicants must be full-time students enrolled in a STEM class with a GPA of at least 3.0. Details can be found at Applications are due April 1, 2023.
Friendly Sons of St Patrick General Scholarship: This organization is offering two awards. A general scholarship of $1000 is available to deserving students in the Greater New Bedford area. Applicants must include a personal statement regarding why this scholarship will be helpful and how it will help the applicant achieve his/her postsecondary goals. A $2000 Irish Heritage scholarship is also available. Applicants must respond to the following essay question in 1500-1800 words: Describe the events before, during, and after The Catalpa Rescue of six Irish Fenians from Freemantle prison. Overcoming Disability Scholarship: The Law Offices of Coats & Todd, a disability law firm, understands the impact physical injuries, health issues, and mental illnesses can have on a person’s ability to properly care for themselves and others. The firm offers The Law Offices of Coats & Todd Overcoming Disability Scholarship, a $2,500 scholarship is to college students who are managing a disability while attending school. Eligible college students across the country are encouraged to submit their materials in the application at the bottom of this page. Christa Baptiste-Patterson Scholarship: This scholarship is in memory of Christa Baptiste-Patterson, who passed away in 1996 from Juvenile Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. The committee promotes bone marrow drives and supports students striving to continue their education. Applicants will need to provide a one-page letter explaining their financial need, what they have done to help others, personal strengths, aspirations, and goals. Southcoast Health Ambassadors: Twenty-five $1500 scholarships are available for high-ranking high school seniors furthering their education in the healthcare field (healthcare is defined as any area of study related to the medical field). Tempus Unlimited, Inc., 2023 College Scholarship Award Program: Tempus Unlimited, Inc., formerly known as the Cerebral Palsy of Massachusetts, is pleased to offer a $2500 scholarship to high school students with disabilities who plan to further their education. The funds may be used for continuing education courses past high school taken within a two year timeframe. Follow this link for details and the application. NMI Foundation Greater New Bedford Maritime Scholarship: The Northeast Maritime Institute Foundation created this scholarship to support students with an interest in a maritime industry career to complete a degree in Nautical Science at Northeast Maritime Institute. Applicants must be graduating from (or a recent graduate of) a high school in the Greater New Bedford area and have applied for admission to the NMI College of Maritime Science Associate in Applied Nautical Science Degree program. Mechanics Cooperative Bank: Up to four college scholarships ranging from $500 to $1500 will be awarded by the Mechanics Cooperative Bank to seniors attending high school in Bristol or Plymouth counties. APplicants must be in the top thirty (30) percent of their class and be accepted to a two- or four-year degree granting institution, including vocational and technical colleges. Gear Up Scholarships: Two $1000 scholarships are available to NBHS Gear Up students. Seven Hills Behavioral Health is sponsoring a scholarship for a Gear Up senior who has demonstrated academic excellence, as well as a scholarship for a Gear Up student who is pursuing a career in education or human services. May Deadlines
Matt T. Benoit Memorial Scholarship: The intent of this scholarship is to recognize a student who resembles the qualities that Matt had. Matt was an average academic student with a solid academic record and appropriate course load, a four sport varsity athlete, and considered a team player. He held down a part time job, making effective use of his time. Applicants than can display the same time management skills will be considered. Matt had a true love of family and his faith. Applicants will be asked to write about how their attributes are similar to Matt’s. For the complete application, follow this link. Completed applications must be submitted by May 1, 2023.

PB&J Foundation Scholarship: Two $1000 awards for students who have experienced personal challenges that may have impacted their academic performance but who have the drive to succeed and plan to attend a two or four year college.
