July 29, 2010 On July 27th, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health issued an advisory stating that New Bedford is one of several local areas considered to be at “high risk” for EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis), a rare virus that can be transmitted to humans by mosquitoes. A community is considered “high risk” if there have been infected mosquitoes found in the area. At this time, it is important to note that there have been no documented cases of EEE found in any humans in New Bedford. However, the following recommendations have been made to decrease exposure to this potentially harmful illness. 1. Avoid being outside from dusk until dawn because mosquito activity peaks at this time. New Bedford Public Schools will continue to remain in close contact with our local board of health regarding mosquito born illnesses, and will post any important changes to their recommendations. For more information regarding mosquito born illnesses, please check the Massachusetts Department of Public Health website at: www.mass.gov/dph Sincerely, Dr. Mary Louise Francis

Mary Louise Francis, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
June 2010
Dear New Bedford Public Schools Students, Families, Staff, and Members of the New Bedford Community:
It’s hard to believe that we are nearing the end of the 2009-2010 school year. The students have worked hard all year, and the last few weeks have been very busy for all. MCAS administration is now over, and we look forward to the various summer activities. The last day of school is June 24.
This is a time for saying goodbye to our graduating seniors as well as other departing students and their families. I wish you the best of luck and hope that we will see you again at some point. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all those teachers and other staff members who are leaving, many of whom are retiring, and wish them all the very best. We value your contribution to our students and to the overall work of the district. You will be missed.
I have been proud to serve as your new Superintendent of Schools since April, and look forward to the next school year. There is much to do, and with everyone’s support, I know many lasting improvements can be made in the district.
Please have a happy, safe, and productive summer!! I look forward to welcoming you back for the 2010-2011 school year.
Sincerely,
Dr. Mary Louise Francis
