Superintendent's Biography - T.Anderson - Old

Thomas Anderson was appointed the Superintendent of New Bedford Public Schools, July 1, 2018, overseeing the urban district of over 13,000 students and over 2,400 staff.  Prior to coming to New Bedford, Mr. Anderson lead the Randolph Public School system in Randolph, MA, a suburb of Boston and one of the most diverse communities in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for the last 4 years.  Under his leadership two schools became Level 2 and the Randolph Public School system exited the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Underperforming Level 4 status after more than 10 years.

Mr. Anderson will continue this systematic focus on teaching and learning while supporting the instructional leadership capacity of all administrators.  The foundation for the turnaround work currently underway will strategically address the secondary schools’ targets including increased graduation rates and a clear trajectory for middle school redesign.

A native of East Hartford, CT, he earned a diploma from Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Rhode Island and a Master’s from Howard University in Washington, DC.  Prior to leading Randolph Public Schools, he was an Assistant Superintendent in the District of Columbia Public School System in Washington, DC.  He was also the founding Principal/Executive Director of a grade 7-12 charter school in the far south-side Chicago Altgeld Gardens neighborhood after being a teacher, administrator and principal in Montgomery County Public School System in Maryland, the 17th largest district (over 155,000 students) in the United States.

Among some highlights, Mr. Anderson was twice featured on Chicago’s ABC 7 news affiliate; he was highlighted in the Washington Post newspaper multiple times; was selected from over 1,000 principals in the Washington Metro area as 1 of 20 principals to participate in the Washington Post Principals Leadership Institute; and he has been highlighted in the Boston Globe and on the ABC Chronicle show.
