MLK 2020 Essay Contest

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 2020 Planning Committee Announces an Essay Contest for Middle and High School Students.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Write a 300 word essay on the following selections below. Essays may be dropped off at The Department of Community Services or at your school’s administration office no later than January 10th at 4:00 PM. Essays will not be returned.

Other Options: New this year, we will allow spoken word, art, poetry as other artistic forms of expression as a response to the essay. If a visual piece is presented, the artist may be asked to speak about it.

 

THEME:

The theme of this year’s Martin Luther King Program is:“Only light can drive out darkness.” This theme is based on a quote by Dr. King, “ Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that, hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that.” In the theme, light could refer to the people working tirelessly for the improvement of human and civil rights. In every generation those beacon of lights can be found among us, giving us hope.

 

CONTENT:

Write about a well-known person(young or old, currently active or historical figure anywhere in the world who has worked to improve human rights, civil rights or women’s rights. Support your essay with examples and quotes from Dr. King. In what way has he or she inspired you? Why is the work important?

 

WINNERS:

Three winners will be selected. The first place award will be $100.00, 2nd place $75.00 and 3rd place $50.00. The first place winner will be requested to read the essay during the Martin Luther King Day program in January.
