FARM TO SCHOOL PROGRAM - Vision
New Bedford Public Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services supports Farm to School efforts in Massachusetts by incorporating locally sourced foods, student engagement, and nutrition education into its meal program. Through initiatives such as Harvest of the Month, students are introduced to a variety of Massachusetts-grown products through taste tests and menu integration. The program emphasizes hands-on learning by connecting cafeteria offerings with classroom education and, when possible, school garden activities. By partnering with local farms and organizations, the district increases access to fresh, seasonal ingredients while promoting agricultural awareness. These efforts help students better understand where their food comes from, encourage healthier eating habits, and strengthen connections between schools and the local food system.
