Gomes Elementary School along with Superintendent Thomas Anderson and city officials today observed the 60th anniversary of the civil rights sit-ins that began in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1960 through the peaceful protests of the Greensboro 4. Students presented Mr. Jibreel Khazan – one of the Greensboro 4, and a New Bedford resident – with a proclamation of their own composition to honor “their real-life hometown hero for his peaceful demonstrations to advocate for equal rights.” Their proclamation titled “Empower Like Jibreel” was read by the Gomes School Youth Ambassadors. The event and students’ research work on the Greensboro 4, is a project of Gomes School’s 21st Century After-School Program in partnership with the Office of Mayor Jon Mitchell and the City Council. Mayor Mitchell presented an official Proclamation of the City. Ward 6 City Councilor Joseph Lopes presented students with their own copies of an official city citation.
