Superintendent

drdurkinPia Durkin became New Bedford’s Superintendent on July 1, 2013, overseeing an urban district with nearly 13,000 students. Dr. Durkin has overseen turnaround of the district with a specific plan for New Bedford High School. She was selected by State Commissioner Chester to serve as a receiver for the John Avery Parker School under state control.  With a systematic focus on teaching and learning linked to intensive support for Principals to build their instructional leadership capacity, there is energy and momentum throughout New Bedford Public Schools based on the declaration, “We are building an excellent school system.”  In August, because major reform changes and student progress noted, New Bedford was released from state monitoring reaffirming by DESE that “this is not the same school district” as it was when the monitor was assigned in 2011.  As part of the turnaround work, New Bedford High School’s graduation rate is the highest in more than a decade.  School redesign plans have also been implemented for New Bedford’s three middle schools.

Among many recent awards, Dr. Durkin was recognized as SouthCoast Woman of the Year by The Standard-Times for her commitment to improving city schools. Prior to New Bedford, Dr. Durkin served as the Superintendent for Attleboro Public Schools, Assistant Superintendent for Boston Public Schools, and worked with the Annenberg Institute for School Reform at Brown University.

She holds a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. from New York University.

 Pia Durkin, Ph.D.
