Taylor Elementary School at the Sea Lab Building by Mayor Jon Mitchell, Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin, along with school leaders and students. Mr. Rasmussen announced a grant award of $40,000 from Siemens to expand science education in New Bedford Public Schools. The funding will make possible an expansion of the science curriculum to 3rd Grade students across the district supported with new lab based science program materials and interactive resources.

“STEM initiatives are increasingly becoming part of the younger generation’s curriculum,” said Joseph Peters, Zone Vice President, of the Siemens Building Technologies Division. “The city is taking an active role in preparing their children for the jobs of the future, and Siemens is proud to be able to provide this grant award to help make that happen.”

“We’re grateful for the investment in our students – and our city’s future – by Siemens,” said Mayor Mitchell. “Interactive, hands-on programs can spark a lifelong interest in science, technology, engineering and math by giving kids the tools and knowledge to grow as critical thinkers.”

In thanking Siemens, Dr. Durkin noted “The goal is to get all of our students thinking like young scientists, employing scientific method, learning through experimentation, testing and questioning results, in the lab and in the classroom. Siemens’ remarkable gift will make it possible to expand this curriculum to all third graders. We are very grateful for Siemens’ continued support of our science education programs.”
